Military court convicts Israeli officer

JERUSALEM, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- A military court has found an Israeli officer guilty for his role in the abduction of a Palestinian cab driver and the shooting of a bystander, it was reported.

Lt. Jacob Gigi, a Lavi Battalion commander in the Israel military's Judea Brigade, was convicted Sunday on charges of exceeding authority, endangering lives, illegal use of firearms, filing a false report and conduct unbecoming an officer, Ynetnews.com reported.

Gigi was indicted in August for his alleged role in the kidnapping and shooting, which occurred during an Israeli military operation in the West Bank.

"I know what I did was wrong and I'm sorry for a lot of things and I take full responsibility for what happened," Gigi told the court.

Gigi's attorneys reached a plea bargain with the Military Prosecutor's Office, in which Gigi was indicted for five counts instead of nine, and is to serve a 15-month prison term, Ynetnews.com said.

Still at issue is whether he will be demoted to private, and whether four other soldiers involved in the incident will be indicted.
