Kidney racketeer escapes India

HARYANA, India, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Authorities in India say the alleged mastermind behind a kidney transplant racket may have fled the country.

Dr. Amit Kumar is accused of being involved in more than 500 illegal kidney transplants in the last eight years.

''We are not ruling out the possibility that he may have escaped abroad by using his contacts. However, he will not be able to escape the legal channels,'' Gurgaon Police Commissioner Mohinder Lal told NDTV Sunday.

Police accuse the ring of luring poor Indians with promises of work and then paying them for the forcible removal of one of their kidneys to be later sold to foreign nationals.

Senior Police Officer Manzil Saini said Kumar evaded arrest after being tipped off about a planned police raid. Kumar reportedly owns two hospitals in Gurgaon under the banner of Liberty Health Care Pvt Ltd.

"Now, it appears so that the information was leaked. This proves that this is a well-established racket,'' said Manzil Saini, a high-ranking police official in Moradabad.

Five foreign tourists, who allegedly had come for kidney transplants, were found in Kumar's luxury guest house Saturday.
