First UAE female prosecutors named

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Authorities in Abu Dhabi have appointed the first female prosecutors in United Arab Emirates history.

By naming two Emirati women to the judicial roles, the Department of Judiciary-Abu Dhabi appears to be falling in line with a 2007 decree from UAE President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, KUNA reported Saturday.

Al Nahyan had called for increased career opportunities for women in the United Arab Emirates and his comments appeared to be a prelude to the department's modernization efforts, the Kuwait News Agency said.

Attorney General Al Ibri called on women in the federation to take advantage of such changes that led to the appointment of prosecutors Aleya Saeed Al Ka'abi and Atiqqah Awad Al Katheeri.

"Some people may think that women's careers are confined to a limited set of professions, but they are wrong. It is important that Emirati women pursue careers in justice, especially in light of the fact that women are now playing leading roles in other areas, including in the UAE National Council and as government ministers. Our justice system should support them and encourage them to excel," Al Ibri told KUNA.
