Man forgotten for 50 hours in courthouse

INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- A courtroom bailiff in Indianapolis was fired after a newly sentenced inmate was left alone in a holding cell for two days.

By the time a Marion County sheriff's deputy discovered James Logan on Sunday afternoon, he had been without food for 50 hours, the Indianapolis Star reported.

At a news conference Monday, Logan said he was especially hungry because he had not eaten breakfast before going to court Friday morning. He was sentenced to six years, with four suspended, on a drug charge.

Deputy Tucker Parker, who was dismissed Monday, took several inmates from the holding cells to the jail and told Logan he would be back. He never returned, and Logan began to suspect something was wrong when he saw a member of the courthouse cleaning crew who just looked at him and left.

A deputy who came to the area on Sunday to find his day planner heard Logan yelling and brought him food.

Two deputies were suspended.

Chief Deputy Kerry Forrestal said that deputies have now been ordered to check the cells at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. to make sure they are empty.
