WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney said Sunday he is confident he will beat his Republican rivals in the Michigan primary.
Speaking on CBS' "Face the Nation" the contender for the Republican presidential nomination said that while he was not sure where the state's Democratic voters would place their support, he was confident he would do well in the state where he grew up, CBS reported.
"I plan on winning Michigan. And there's no question if it were just Republicans and independents, I'd win Michigan," Romney told host Bob Schieffer. "But Democrats also get to vote in the primary here, so you can't be 100 percent sure."
With Michigan currently mired in a recession, the presidential hopeful laid the blame for the state's financial woes on politicians in Washington.
"For 10 years, Washington has watched what's going on in Michigan, has seen a one-state recession, and has, frankly, been either indifferent or incapable of acting," he said. "Washington is fundamentally broken."
The former governor said during the CBS program he supports helping struggling Michigan industries such as the declining auto industry to help reverse the troubling economic trend.
