TEL AVIV, Israel, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- A Tel Aviv, Israel, court ruled to keep a former Georgia Tech basketball player in custody until at least Tuesday on suspicion of hitting a man with his car.
Will Bynum, who plays on the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team, and some of his teammates were reportedly involved in an altercation at a Tel Aviv night club that allegedly ended with Bynum running over a 22-year-old man while driving from the scene, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Monday.
The victim was hospitalized with serious injuries.
Paul Hewitt, who coached Hewitt at Georgia Tech during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons, voiced support Sunday for his former player.
"I reached out to his agent (Saturday night). He called me (Sunday)," Hewitt said. "We've been in touch with his family. I wasn't there, but I've heard details. All I can say is Will is a family man now."
"He recently lost his dad. He's now taking care of his mom financially. I would be very surprised if Will Bynum did anything to jeopardize the way he earns a living," he told the Journal-Constitution.
