Canada becoming U.S. ecstasy supplier

BUFFALO, N.Y., Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Canada has become a top supplier of the illegal drug ecstasy for the United States, reports from U.S. and Canadian departments say.

Reports from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the White House Office of National Drug Policy said not only has Canada become a major ecstasy exporter to the United States, but those products are laced with methamphetamine, the Buffalo (N.Y.) News said Sunday.

The inclusion of methamphetamine in the designer drug has proven especially troubling to anti-drug officials.

"This 'Extreme Ecstasy' is a disturbing development in what has been one of the most significant international achievements against the drug trade," said John Walters, the White House drug policy chief.

Walters said the new illegal product was particularly dangerous when combined with alcohol.

"The potential for a life-threatening or fatal overdose is also increased when meth-laced Ecstasy is combined with alcohol," Walters said.
