NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Arson at a church in western Kenya killed at least 50 people in post-election tribal violence sparked by allegations of vote-rigging.
Correspondents from The Times of London and The New York Times said a mob doused the church with gasoline and set it afire on Tuesday in the town of Eldoret.
The deaths pushed the toll past 300 since the Dec. 27 election that returned incumbent President Mwai Kibaki to power with a tiny majority.
European Union election monitors said there had been irregularities in the voting, which pitted Kibaki against opposition leader Raila Odinga.
The Red Cross reported some 70,000 people had fled the arson and violence. African Union leader, Ghanaian President John Kufuor, arrived in Nairobi Wednesday to attempt mediation.
Odinga called for a national protest march on Thursday, which many Kenyans fear could become a bloodbath, the Times reported.
Kibaki has refused European demands for an inquiry into alleged vote-rigging, The Times said.
