Egyptian collapse has claimed 33 lives

ALEXANDRIA, Egypt, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Three bodies were found Saturday in the ruins of a collapsed building in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, bringing the total death toll to 33 people.

While the toll from Monday's collapse continued to rise, rescue workers kept searching through rubble for any possible survivors, the BBC said.

Since the Alexandria building collapsed, only three individuals have been rescued.

The deadly collapse occurred as constructions workers were conducting renovations on the building, leading authorities to issue an arrest warrant for the owner of the property. One of the contractors taking part in the renovation effort also has been arrested, the BBC reported.

Authorities have alleged the building was built without a proper permit 25 years ago and that additional stories were added later without proper authorization.

The building's owners also failed to respond to requests that the building's top two stories be removed, authorities alleged.
