Michigan issues ruling on driver's license

LANSING, Mich., Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox issued a ruling denying Michigan driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

The attorney general's opinion said a driver's license permits individuals to cash checks, travel on commercial airplanes and close bank loans in addition to granting the right to drive a vehicle, the Detroit Free Press said Friday.

"It really gets to the issue of whether a government document should be issued to basically help someone break the law, by the fact that they're in this country illegally," said Michigan Secretary of State spokesman Ken Silfven. "In our view, the answer is no."

The director of the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Raymond Lozano said it is the responsibility of the federal government to determine the legal status of individuals.

"If each state does something individually," Lozano told the Free Press, "you get a mishmash of regulations."
