ADELAIDE, Australia, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- David Hicks, the Australian detained more than five years by the United States at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is set to be released from jail in Adelaide, Australia.
Hicks, 32, was eventually convicted of supporting terrorism after being captured in Afghanistan fighting with Taliban forces.
After his trial in Guantanamo, he was flown to Yatala prison in Adelaide, the capital of his home state, South Australia, to serve out a nine month sentence.
A federal magistrate last week imposed a control order on Hicks after his release, scheduled for Saturday.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd told reporters Hicks "should be treated no differently to any other Australian citizen in these circumstances and our expectations of him are that he will comply with the requirements which have been imposed upon him."
