Jordan urged to change assembly laws

AMMAN, Jordan, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Human Rights Watch on Monday urged the United States and European Union to restrict funding to Jordan until the nation changes its freedom-restricting laws.

In its "Shutting Out the Critics" report, Human Rights Watch called on Jordan to change laws the stifle public assembly and restrict freedoms of nongovernmental organizations.

"The government is using oppressive laws and practices to shut out private citizens from peacefully participating in public policy debates," said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch.

Jordan has enforced a law since 2001 that defines gatherings broadly -- including meetings of two or more in homes and offices -- and requires advance permission. Officials may prohibit such gatherings without allowing an appeal, Human Rights Watch said.
