MANCHESTER, England, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- British police Sunday arrested the wife of a man who recently reappeared after having been declared dead after vanishing in his canoe five years ago.

Anne Darwin, 55, was taken into custody at Manchester airport after a flight from the United States, the Daily Mail reported in an exclusive.

Her husband, John, 57, walked into a London police station last week, five years after his canoe was found wrecked, he was pronounced dead about a year later and his wife collected his life insurance money, the British newspaper reported. After several days of questioning his purported amnesia, police arrested Darwin on charges of fraud, the Mail reported.

Anne Darwin allegedly has admitted her husband lived in their family home for much of his disappearance and even hid himself from their two grieving sons when they came to visit their "widowed" mother.

Anne and John Darwin allegedly bought shore land near Panama City, Panama, recently and planned to open a tourist resort offering kayak trips, the Mail reported.
