Man suspected of fraud after re-emergence

LONDON, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- A British man who mysteriously reappeared after he was believed dead in a canoeing accident is being investigated for fraud.

Police said John Darwin, who walked into a London police station Saturday -- five years after he was thought to have drowned -- has been arrested, The Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday.

The arrest follows the publication of a picture that purportedly shows Darwin, who claims to have suffered amnesia for the past few years, with his wife in Panama during 2006. Police said they have seen the picture but have not confirmed whether the couple in the photo are the Darwins.

Anne Darwin confirmed Tuesday she cashed in on her husband's life insurance policy after he was declared legally dead. However, she said she collected on the policy "in good faith," believing her husband to be deceased.

"There will be people out there who know exactly where he has been, what he has been doing and where he has been living," said Detective Superintendent Tony Hutchinson of Cleveland Police. "Fraud is an obvious line of inquiry, there will be other lines of inquiry and we cannot rule out the fact that John Darwin did suffer from amnesia."
