Sikh joke lays egg; telecom firm charged

MEERUT, India, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- The "Joke of the Day" in India wasn't too funny to the Sikh community and has landed a cell phone company and a local tycoon in court.

Police in the state of Uttar Pradesh charged Reliance Communications and Anil Ambani with insulting a religion over a recorded riddle with a punch line that came at the Sikhs' expense.

The charge carries a three-year prison term, and the Times of London said Tuesday the incident sparked violent protests in Meerut this week.

The Times noted that Sikhs have been the butt of jokes in India for many years; however, some Sikh leaders say the cheap laughs have been getting out of hand in recent years due to the rapid spread of Internet and telephone communications.

The Times said the offending joke went something like, "What's the difference between a Sikh and donkey? A tail."
