New food product labels on the horizon

NEW YORK, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- New labels with special rating systems will soon adorn most U.S. food products as various groups are creating their own renditions of the advisory tags.

While several groups are putting together new rating systems to offer consumers information about what they are eating, some consumer advocates are concerned the lack of a single national standard could become problematic, The New York Times said Saturday.

Another point of concern for advocates is how each group will approach its recommendations, as current scientific findings differ greatly when looking at diet and health.

Yet those behind the new labels defend their attempts to inform consumers, contending their rating systems will allow Americans to better control their diets.

"It's not enough to come up with a score that spinach is healthier than potato chips," University of Washington nutritionist Adam Drewnowski, who is helping put together a ratings system, said. "What happens to the vast majority of foods in the middle of the range? How do they compare? Ours does that."
