CHICAGO, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Illinois officials say a former death row inmate allegedly tortured by Chicago police in 1982 has died in prison.
Andrew Wilson's allegations of police brutality led to the firing of former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge, The Chicago Tribune said Thursday. Wilson accused Burge of torturing him for more than 17 hours after he was arrested for allegedly killing two police officers.
Burge was fired in 1993 but was never prosecuted. A special prosecutor's report said Wilson was tortured, the newspaper reported.
Wilson was sentenced to death in 1983 but his conviction was overturned four years later. He was tried and convicted again and was serving a life sentence.
The Illinois Department of Corrections said Wilson died last week of complications associated with a longstanding medical condition.
