YouTube focus of NATO's Afghan efforts

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- The online video Web site, YouTube, has become the focus of NATO's anti-Taliban efforts in Afghanistan, a spokesman for the international group said.

NATO spokesman James Appathurai said the increasing amount of video propaganda created by Taliban forces in Afghanistan prompted NATO officials to make YouTube its new battleground, CNN reported Wednesday.

"The Taliban, who are literally cave-dwellers, are doing better than we are on a key battleground -- and that's video," Appathurai said. "They deploy with videographers. We don't. They have DVDs out in an hour. We don't."

Appathurai said by posting previously classified videos on the popular online Web site, NATO officials are attempting to win public support for their six-year battle in Afghanistan.

"We're, in a sense, winning the tactical battles, but we're not focusing enough on the strategic battle, which is public opinion," he told CNN.

Currently there are nearly 41,000 NATO troops stationed in Afghanistan, marking the international group's largest military operation ever.
