SOFIA, Bulgaria, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Bulgaria has abolished mandatory military service for young men, clearing the way for fully professional armed forces.
The last group of conscripts have been discharged, the Sofia News Agency said Monday.
By ending the obligatory service, the Bulgarian government is considering how to attract young people to the professional army. High paychecks are a main incentive.
Bulgaria joined NATO in 2004 and became member of the European Union in January.
