Evangelist: 'Husband trying to destroy me'

ATLANTA, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Georgia evangelist Juanita Bynum's war of words with her estranged minister husband continue with her accusing him of trying to destroy her reputation.

Bishop Thomas Weeks III held a news conference Wednesday in which he objected to Bynum's interview in Essence magazine. Bynum described a violent relationship that included a physical assault in an Atlanta hotel parking lot.

"Bishop Weeks is doing exactly what he promised he would do and that is, try to destroy my name with lies, fabrications and exaggerations," Bynum said in a statement released Friday. "His behavior is to be expected."

Weeks said he expects to be cleared by the judicial system. He faces an assault charge in Atlanta, while the couple's divorce is pending in Gwinnett County.

Bynum says she would have no motive to fake an attack, given the negative publicity she has faced.

"I was Juanita Bynum when I walked into this marriage and I will continue to be Juanita Bynum as I exit from this marriage in spite of all false allegations that have come against my name," she said.

Bynum and Weeks, who married in 2002, created the Global Destiny Christian Community.
