N.Korea dismisses U.N. rights resolution

PYONGYANG, North Korea, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- The North Korean government says a United Nations resolution on its human rights violations is based on lies and fabrication, Yonhap reported.

A North Korean foreign ministry spokesman said his government "categorically dismisses" the Third Committee of the 62nd U.N. General Assembly's approval of the North Korean Human Rights Resolution, the report said.

The non-binding resolution, submitted by Japan and the European Union, passed Tuesday by a 97-23 vote, with 60 abstentions. It expresses concern at "continuing reports of systematic, widespread and grave violations of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights" in the communist country.

Yonhap reported South Korea abstained from the vote, although it had voted for such a resolution last year.
