Olmert criticized for arming Palestinians

JERUSALEM, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Israeli parliamentarians criticized Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's decision to provide the Palestinians with armored vehicles and bullets.

"The armored vehicles and the ammunition will be directed at the citizens of Israel. The fact that the prime minister is showing contempt for the warnings of the defense establishment is complete anarchy," said Zevulun Orlev, chairman of the National Religious Party.

Olmert decided to supply the Palestinians with 25 Russian armored vehicles and 2 million bullets from Jordan despite warnings from the military, Ynetnews reported Wednesday.

Proponents defended the move as a goodwill gesture pre-empting Israeli-Palestinian peace talks scheduled for next Tuesday in Annapolis, Md.

"We must give the PA an opportunity to fight terror, otherwise we will never leave the West Bank," said Knesset Member Avshalom Vilan.
