ROME, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Talks between the European Union and Iran over its nuclear policy went well, both sides said in Rome, and more talks are planned for later next month.
"The meeting today has been constructive ... and I hope very much that we will continue," said EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana after the Tuesday meeting with the new and former nuclear negotiators for Iran.
Negotiator Ali Larijani resigned last weekend in Tehran, but attended to support his replacement, Saeed Jalili, Voice of America reported.
Jalili said he will continue the same course as Larijani and said that the talks were an opportunity to forge better ties with Europe.
Iran has held three sets of talks both with the European Union, and the United Nations over its nuclear program, which it claims is solely for electricity production.
However, there are Western fears its uranium enrichment process could also be used to manufacture nuclear weapons.
Because of Tehran's refusal to cease enrichments, the U.N. Security Council imposed two sets of sanctions, which it will review later next month.
