Sarkozy's divorce from his wife, Cecilia, became final last week after much speculation about their separation. At the end of a European Union summit in Lisbon, Portugal, Friday, Sarkozy lit into a Le Monde reporter who asked about the split.

"The French are less interested in it than you are and they are right. And they are more discreet and perhaps more elegant than you are, sir,” Sarkozy told the reporter.

In an interview last week in The Republican, a newspaper published in eastern France, Sarkozy's ex-wife said she admired he ex-husband but no longer loved him, describing Sarkozy as a political virtuoso for whom power is “like a Stradivarius violin."
