WASHINGTON, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., rebuked a member of her party for his attack on House Republicans and President George W. Bush.
Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif., made his remarks during the debate on overriding Bush's veto of the S-CHIP children's health program.
"You're going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the president's amusement," Stark said on the House floor Thursday, speaking of the $35 million the bill would have added to S-CHIP.
Pelosi, like Stark a Bay Area Democrat, said Stark went too far, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.
"While members of Congress are passionate about their views, what Congressman Stark said during the debate was inappropriate and distracted from the seriousness of the subject at hand -- providing health care for America's children," Pelosi said.
