Madeleine McCann believed to be dead

LONDON, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- The parents of missing 4-year-old Madeleine McCann were said to be “dismayed but realistic” that police in Portugal are looking for a body.

Gerry and Kate McCann have not given up hope on finding their daughter alive, but Portuguese police are expecting on finding her dead, The Sun reported.

The police's most recent plan is to drag the Barragem da Bravura lake, also known as the “Reservoir of the Wilderness," the British newspaper said

The couple is said to be encouraged by the new vigor given to the police investigation by new chief Paulo Rebelo. If the girl is found dead in Portugal then the McCanns would hope to be eliminated as suspects.

“It would be a tragedy for Kate and Gerry. But if she is dead, then she is dead, but not by their hand," said a family friend. “They want the cloud of suspicion lifted from them. They are encouraged by any renewed vigor in the case.”
