U.N. envoy in talks with Myanmar junta

YANGON, Myanmar, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- A U.N. envoy met with members of Myanmar's military junta about its management of pro-democracy demonstrations.

Envoy Ibrahim Gambari arrived in the tense country Saturday, and on Sunday was given the rare permission to meet in Yangon, formerly Rangoon, with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest in varying degrees since 1989 and prohibited from talking with foreigners, CNN reported.

Gambari then traveled Sunday to the fortress-like capital Naypyidaw for talks with senior government officials, but a U.N. release provided no details of the talks.

Last month, the government announced the price of fuel was doubling, which led Buddhist monks to begin quiet demonstration marches. Days later, students joined them, and the military began firing tear gas and live ammunition at them, reports said.

There were unconfirmed reports at least 10 protesters had been killed by the police and soldiers in the country, formerly known as Burma.

Monasteries are reportedly under lockdown, and streets in Yangon are desolate, the report said.
