China urges restraint in Myanmar

BEIJING, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- China rejected criticism that it hasn't taken a strong stand in the Myanmar crisis as “totally slanderous.”

"We have noticed the false reports by some media," the China Daily quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu as saying. “They are totally slanderous and reflect ulterior motives."

She also said China hoped the international media would objectively report on the events in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, and that it would “not add fuel to the fire.” She said China hoped Myanmar would commit itself to improving people's livelihood, the report said.

Jiang made the comments while saying China wants all parties in Myanmar to show restraint and "properly handle" the current situation.

"As a neighbor, China is paying great attention to the situation in Myanmar," Jiang said.

The Chinese reaction comes in the wake of reports about its refusal to condemn the military junta in Myanmar or refusal to support sanctions. China, however, has supported the U.N. Secretary-General’s decision to send a special envoy to Myanmar.
