Pepper spray released in elderly housing

BOSTON, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- A card game at an apartment building for the elderly in Boston was broken up when someone released pepper spray in the common room.

No one was seriously injured in the incident Friday night at the Woodbourne Apartments in Jamaica Plain, The Boston Globe reported. But those in the common room experienced coughing and watering eyes.

"I just don't know how this could have happened," Josephine Baker, an 89-year-old resident, told the newspaper. "I have nice neighbors, and nothing like this has ever happened."

One resident, a 66-year-old disabled veteran, was questioned by police because he had carried pepper spray in the past. He denied having anything to do with Friday’s attack.

Emergency technicians examined eight people at the scene and took three to Faulkner Hospital for observation.
