Oakland gun not tied to 'Bakery' shooting

OAKLAND, Calif., Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Police in Oakland reversed a conclusion that a shotgun used to kill a newsman had also been used in a shooting tied to a bakery run by a Black Muslim group.

The Oakland Tribune said Saturday that the connection between the slaying of Oakland Post editor Chauncey Bailey and a 2005 attempt on the life of a bakery official was the result of a misunderstanding between investigators and the crime lab.

Bailey was shot to death last month while working on a story about Your Black Muslim Bakery and its tangled finances. The bakery is considered a charity and is the recipient of government job-training funds.

Bakery official John Bay was injured in a shotgun attack in 2005. The weapon was recovered in a raid during the Bailey investigation. A handyman at the bakery later confessed.
