MOGADISHU, Somalia, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Fighting between Somalian government forces and a rebel group in a Mogadishu market left seven people dead and 26 others wounded.
Dr. Hassan Osman Burane of the Medina medical center said 17 people sustained bullet and shrapnel
wounds serious enough to warrant admittance and nine others were discharged after receiving treatment for minor wounds, the Shabelle Media Network reported Wednesday. He said five people were in critical condition after the fighting and may require surgery.
Nine of the wounded were police officers, the network said.
Meanwhile, Somali officials said an officer from the transitional government's security agency was killed Tuesday night by armed attackers in Mogadishu. The Darkenly district commissioner said two men armed with pistols shot and killed the man, who went by the name Shakier, while he was entering his home.
The commissioner said police were searching for suspects.
