Hurricane-force winds extended 15 miles from the storm center, while tropical storm-force winds reached out 125 miles. Little strengthening was forecast.

As much as 8 inches of rain was expected to fall once the system hits land, forecasters said.

The storm hit the Baja Peninsula on Tuesday afternoon with winds of 85 mph east of Cabo San Lucas. Several thousand people were evacuated but there was no immediate indication of death or injuries.

Henriette struck Mexico from the Pacific the same day Hurricane Felix hit Nicaragua from the Atlantic, the first such occurrence since record keeping began in 1949.
