U.N. sends aid to Felix-affected countries

MANAGUA, Nicaragua, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- The United Nations said it is sending aid to Nicaragua and other Central American countries expected to sustain damage from Hurricane Felix.

Felix was a Category 5 hurricane with winds of 160 mph when it made landfall Tuesday morning in Nicaragua. It lost some of its punch as it moved across the country.

“What we are really concerned about is the communities further north, because they are very isolated indigenous communities,” Debora Comini, UNICEF representative in Nicaragua said in a news release. “The living conditions are very basic and there’s no infrastructure to withstand this kind of wind and rain.”

Pre-positioned water, shelter, water treatment stations and first aid kits are ready to begin operations in all potentially affected countries, Comini said.

The U.N. World Food Program said that it will send emergency teams to the region, saying it has enough food to feed 600,000 people for one month.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs also sent a six-member U.N. Disaster Assessment and Coordination team to Honduras to coordinate international assistance and assess urgent needs.
