Bush motorcade cop dies in crash

ALBUQUERQUE, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A motorcycle police officer died Monday when he crashed while riding near the front of President George Bush's motorcade in New Mexico.

Rio Rancho Police Officer Germaine Casey's motorcycle apparently hit a curb and then a tree. The president saw the fatal wreck as he drove past on his way to the Albuquerque airport, The New Mexican reported.

Casey, 40, was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, the newspaper said.

Bush, who was in New Mexico for a fundraiser for Sen. Pete Domenici, "called to give his condolences to our officer's family and to our department," said Officer John Francis, a department spokesman.
