More raids on Palestinian camp in Lebanon

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- The Lebanese Air Force bombed what remains of the Fatah Al-Islam militia, hunkered down in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, KUNA reported.

Air force helicopters were used in four successive raids Thursday at Nahr El-Bared, a camp located in the northern part of Lebanon, said KUNA, the Kuwait News Agency.

At least 10 militants are believed dead and military boats were deployed along the camp's shore to prevent others from fleeing by sea, the National News Agency said.

Lebanese troops reportedly captured a top Fatah Al-Islam militant, Mohammad Kassem Al-Saadi, Wednesday as he tried to escape in this manner.

The prosecutor-general this week accused 107 detainees -- most of whom are Lebanese or Palestinian -- of being members of the rebel group, while another 119 are still wanted.

Meanwhile, French Foreign Ministry envoy Jean-Claude Cousseran was to hold talks with senior Lebanese officials, including Prime Minister Fuad Siniora, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berry and politicians from the country's majority and opposition parties.

The purpose of Cousseran's official three-day visit is to resume efforts French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner had started in hopes of breaking the political deadlock in the country, KUNA said.
