Israeli police break up Islamist meeting

JERUSALEM, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Israeli police say officers in east Jerusalem broke up a meeting of Hamas and an Israeli Islamic group.

Police said in a statement that the Wednesday gathering was attended by about 30 people, including members of Hamas -- which is considered a terrorist organization by the Israeli government and is barred from conducting political activities in east Jerusalem -- Ynetnews reported Thursday.

The statement said the group refused initial orders from paramilitary border police to disperse, but "a stun grenade was thrown, and the meeting broke up."

Sheik Raed Salah, a prominent Israeli-Arab Islamist leader, was taken from the site of the rooftop meeting to a hospital on a stretcher, but was later released.

The statement did not say whether any arrests were made.
