German allegedly confesses to killings

AACHEN, Germany, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- A 51-year-old German man allegedly has admitted raping and killing five women and girls more than two decades ago.

Police said the suspect was arrested Monday and confessed to attacking and killing the five victims, ages 15 to 31, in and around Aachen between 1983 and 1990, Deutsche Welle reported. Police said he had voluntarily submitted a DNA sample this year after being caught stealing scrap metal and tests matched him to DNA clues in the case of a 17-year-old girl who was raped and strangled Sept. 1, 1984, while hitchhiking.

The man is a former insurance salesman and trained nurse, Deutsche Welle reported Tuesday.

The arrest came as Aachen authorities were getting ready to conduct genetic testing on 150 people who lived in the vicinity of the 17-year-old victim.
