WASHINGTON, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- The FBI is investigating whether a U.S. senator from Alaska helped arrange a $70 million contract for a company that oversaw work on his house.
A 1999 contract awarded by the National Science Foundation to oil services company VECO for Arctic research logistics work was being investigated, The New York Times reported.

The following year, VECO founder Bill J. Allen took over a renovation project on Sen. Ted Stevens’ home and arranged to have the contractors’ bills sent to VECO, the Times reported.
Stevens has said he always paid the bills sent to him by Allen, a former business partner, the newspaper reported.
