Five U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Five U.S. soldiers were killed by explosives and terrorists linked to al-Qaida bombed the house of a sheik in Iraq, it was reported Sunday.

Four U.S. soldiers died and four others were injured Saturday when a bomb exploded near their patrol south of Baghdad, said U.S. Army officials. A fifth soldier from the same task force was killed by gunmen southeast of Baghdad Saturday.

The deaths bring to 3,687, the number of U.S. soldiers killed since the start of the war in March 2003. So far this month 28 have been killed, reported KUNA, the Kuwait News Agency.

In northern Baghdad, one person died and three were hurt when gunmen with suspected ties to al-Qaida bombed the house of Sheik Watheq Al-Ubaidi, the Imam of Abu Hanifa Al-Numan's mosque, KUNA reported. The blast injured the Imam and killed his brother.
