Democrats call for more troop rest time

WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Frequent rotations of U.S. troops into Iraq were criticized Saturday in the Democrats' weekly radio address.

Rep. Ellen Tauscher, D-Calif., chairwoman of the House Strategic Forces Subcommittee, said troops “deserve better than a revolving door” of multiple deployments.

“As soon as they return we rush them back into battle,” Tauscher said. “Army generals recommend that in times of war, our troops have two years away from combat after one year on the battlefield.”

Tauscher called for support for a bill that mandates a minimum period of rest stateside before units are sent back into the fray. Exceptions would be made in the event of dire emergencies or when individuals volunteer for another tour in Iraq or Afghanistan.

She also said a similar bill in the Senate was being bottled up by a Republican filibuster.
