PITTSBURGH, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Heavy rain inundated much of western Pennsylvania overnight as heat and high humidity kicked off the week along the East Coast.
Flash flooding and power outages in the pre-dawn hours Monday made for a sleepless night in the Pittsburgh suburbs as more than 2 inches of rain pounded the North Hills region and 1 ½ inches drenched Pittsburgh International Airport.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review said officials estimated the worst was over by daybreak, although the forecast calls for a chance of thunderstorms through Friday. The heaviest rain moved into New England and the New York City area Monday afternoon.
The unsettled weather also whipped up a funnel cloud along the Virginia coast overnight and the Hampton Roads Pilot said lightning hit a house in Virginia Beach, causing $100,000 in damage.
The National Weather Service posted excessive heat advisories in North Carolina and around Philadelphia as well as along the Mississippi River in Dixie, Tulsa and Branson, Mo.
