Teenager thrown from Coney Island ride

NEW YORK, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- A 15-year-old girl was in stable condition after being thrown from a thrill ride at New York's Coney Island.

Police sources said the teenager was riding the Polar Express when her lap safety belt apparently broke and she was immediately thrown from the moving vehicle, the New York Post reported Saturday.

Following Friday's accident, the teen was taken to a hospital where she was treated for a head injury, along with neck and back pain.

The ride, which spins its 20 cars forward and in reverse, was closed as a precautionary measure and the New York Department of Buildings and Department of Consumer Affairs was to launch an investigation into the incident.

Officials said the amusement ride was not involved in any similar accidents last year.

A worker was killed at New York's Rye Playland June 29 after she was hurled from the park's Mind Scrambler ride, the Post said.
