NEW YORK, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- A former teacher's aide at a New York City day-care center has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for molesting a 4-year-old boy in a bathroom.
Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said that Khemwatie Bedessie deserved the long sentence because she was in a position of trust at Veda's Daycare Center in South Ozone Park, Newsday reported.
"One can only hope that he recovers from the emotional and physical trauma she inflicted upon him," he said in a statement. "The defendant is a danger to society and her lengthy prison sentence will ensure that other children are protected from such a sexual predator."
A jury convicted Bedessie in June of first-degree rape, six counts of first-degree sexual abuse and one count of endangering the welfare of a minor. Prosecutors said that Bedessie would take her victim into a bathroom during while children were napping or in the early morning and molest him.
The evidence included a videotaped confession.
