Sara Lee issues bread recall

MERIDIAN, Miss., July 28 (UPI) -- Sara Lee Food and Beverage is recalling several whole-wheat bread items in eight southern U.S. states due to possible metal contamination.

The company said in a statement Thursday that some products sold in Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana and Florida may contain small pieces of metal. The items, featuring the code "222" on their packaging, were produced at Sara Lee's bakery in Meridian, Miss.

The affected products are stamped "best if purchased by" between the dates of July 25 and Aug. 7, 2007.

Sara Lee said the products should not be consumed and should be returned to the store where they were bought for a full refund.

The products are being removed from all store shelves, and all retail and institutional food-service customers have been notified, the company said.

Sara Lee is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in undertaking the voluntary recall.
