Japanese PM could lose upper house

TOKYO, July 28 (UPI) -- Japan's LDP-New Komeito coalition may lose control of the Japanese Parliament upper house, a new poll suggested.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party have slipped badly with women and unaffiliated voters, and are at risk of losing control of the House of Counselors in Sunday's election, Kyodo News Service reported.

The opposition Democratic Party of Japan's margin among unaffiliated voters has grown significantly since June, a Kyodo poll released Thursday found. The DPJ has also gained among women voters.

Abe's approval rating has plunged since he became prime minister 10 months ago -- from 65 percent in September to less than 30 percent now. The government has been hit by a series of scandals, notably the discovery that millions of records of payments to the Social Security system have been lost, resulting in underpayment of pensions.

Since Abe took office, two cabinet ministers have resigned and one has committed suicide.
