France pursues Lebanon diplomacy

BEIRUT, Lebanon, July 28 (UPI) -- France's foreign minister was in Lebanon Saturday to try to ease tensions between supporters of Lebanon's prime minister and pro-Syrian opposition.

Bernard Kouchner's visit is a follow-up to a conference France sponsored earlier this month, the BBC reported.

Supporters of Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora have been deadlocked with members of the pro-Syrian opposition since November when the Shiite Hezbollah-led opposition, backed by Syria and Iran, withdrew from the Cabinet after demanding a unity government in which it would have veto power.

Tensions are expected to escalate in the coming months over the appointment of a successor to the Christian and pro-Syrian President, Emile Lahoud.
