La. doctor not charged for Katrina victims

NEW ORLEANS, July 24 (UPI) -- A Louisiana doctor will not face charges related to the deaths of several Hurricane Katrina victims, a New Orleans special grand jury ruled Tuesday.

While New Orleans physician Anna Pou had been accused of taking part in the euthanization of several patients during the 2005 natural disaster, the Criminal District Court grand jury ruled against any possible indictments against her, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.

The court's ruling ends a year-long investigation into the physician's medical efforts at New Orleans' Memorial Medical Center during the destructive hurricane.

Pou had been facing possible indictments in the deaths of 10 patients at the center during Katina, who allegedly died after receiving fatal amounts of sedatives and painkillers.

Louisiana Attorney General Charles Foti had accused Pou and two nurses at the center of deciding to euthanize those patients rather than attempt to evacuate them during the growing storm, the newspaper said.
