PRESTONSBURG, Ky., July 19 (UPI) -- U.S. Democratic presidential hopeful and former Sen. John Edwards retraced the campaign steps of the late Sen. Robert Kennedy in poor regions of Kentucky.
As Kennedy did while campaigning in Kentucky in February 1968, Edwards, D-N.C., stopped in Whitesburg and Prestonsburg and spoke of establishing universal healthcare, higher wages and ending the war in Iraq, the Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal reported Thursday.
Like Kennedy, Edwards is making poverty alleviation the centerpiece of his campaign.
"This country needs a movement to restore our values," Edwards told a crowd. "We're going to raise the national minimum wage so people working for the minimum can actually provide for a family," the Courier-Journal report said.
In most polls for the 2008 presidential race, Edwards is running third in the Democratic race behind Sens. Hillary Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois.
