Stanzel: View on Gonzales unchanged

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE, July 10 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush has confidence in his attorney general despite a report Alberto Gonzales failed to act on reports of FBI lapses, a spokesman said.

During Tuesday's press briefing aboard Air Force One en route to Cleveland, White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said Bush's position on Gonzales has not changed.

The Washington Post Tuesday reported Gonzales assured Congress the FBI had not abused the USA Patriot Act, even though he had received reports agents obtained personal information they were not supposed to have and committed other abuses.

"The president has said repeatedly that he has great faith in the attorney general, and that has not changed," Stanzel said, adding, "The president's views on the attorney -- the president's views on the attorney general have not changed."
