DAMASCUS, Syria, July 9 (UPI) -- The situation in Lebanon topped the agenda Monday when Syrian President Bashar Assad met with the secretary-general of the Arab League.
Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa visited Damascus for bilateral discussions with Assad on a variety of issues including how to deal with escalating violence between the Lebanese government and the al-Qaida inspired Fatah al-Islam, Alalam Satellite Television reported.
Lebanese government officials accused Syria of backing the insurgents, a charge Damascus denied.
Other items discussed by the two leaders reportedly involved the necessity of reviving dialogue between Palestinian factions and the importance of preserving Arab solidarity.
"Talks during the meetings deal with all sensitive points, particularly the situations in Lebanon and Palestine in addition to the Iraqi issue and the upcoming steps within the Arab Frame," Moussa told reporters.
